Liverpool travel to the Spanish capital to meet Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid tonight.

The match is a repeat of the 2019-20 round-of-16 clash that saw the La Liga side end Liverpool’s hopes of winning back-to-back Champions League titles just days before the first national lockdown in England.

Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool is a tasty UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday (start time, 3pm ET) as Diego Simeone and Jurgen Klopp lock horns in the Spanish capital.

Few will need reminding that Mohamed Salah is in fine fettle ahead of the game and, having scored two stunning goals in as many matches, could have a big influence on proceedings. Indeed, it’s a meeting of the club’s past and present, with Salah up against Luis Suarez, playing against his former employers for only the third time since leaving in 2014.

This season in the Champions League Liverpool have won both of their opening Group B games, while Atletico have four points from their clashes against AC Milan and Porto. These next two games between Liverpool and Atletico will likely decide which team wins the group and gets an easier path in the Round of 16.

As things stand in Group B, Liverpool lead the way with two wins from two, although Atletico could go above them with a victiory. The home side have not yet looked entirely convincing so far this season despite winning the league last time out, dropping points in three of their eight league games, though they did manage to beat Barcelona prior to the international break.

Perhaps crucially, the Spanish champions were not in action over the weekend, affording Simeone some time to recover some key players.

The first of those games takes place on Tuesday evening at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, although Los Colchoneros will be aware they are facing a team that are in top form in Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah has been imperious of late, scoring a quite magnificent individual goal in Saturday’s 5-0 victory over Watford, and you’d expect Atletico’s defence to need to be at their best to keep him quiet.

Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool predicted line-ups
Atletico Madrid’s predicted line-up: Oblak, Savic, Hermoso, Felipe, Koke, Carrasco, De Paul, Lemar, Trippier, Suarez, Griezmann

Liverpool’s predicted line-up: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Keita, Salah, Firmino, Mane

James Benge: The Turkish champions have wobbled a bit of late in Turkey and have been underwhelming in the Champions League whilst Sporting look to be a solid enough outfit. This is a crucial match for both sides but only in the fight for the Europa League. Pick: Besiktas 1, Sporting 2

Roger Gonzalez: Two teams that have shown very little so far against superior opponents. I like the draw as both attacks have struggled. Pick: Besiktas 1, Sporting 1
