Premier League leaders Manchester City welcome Southampton to the Etihad Stadium tonight as Pep Guardiola’s hosts look to bounce back after their derby defeat by rivals Man United, while their visitors aim to make it back-to-back wins in the division.
City were 2-0 losers at home on Sunday due to a Bruno Fernandes penalty and Luke Shaw strike, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s second-placed Red Devils reduced the gap to City to 11 points with 10 games left to play while ending Guardiola’s team’s incredible winning run of 21 matches. But City could move a step closer to the title this evening by picking up three points against Southampton, who are down in 14th in the table – seven points off the relegation zone.

Manchester City will be looking to put a derby defeat behind them quickly with a positive performance and result against Southampton tonight.
City had won their last 15 Premier League outings in a wider 28-game unbeaten run, before slipping to a 2-0 reverse against United on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s men can put that right by winning tonight against Southampton and restoring their lead at the top of the table to 14 points. With United in Europa League action this week, City will have played a game more until Carabao Cup final weekend next month.
Unfortunately for Manchester City, their winning run this season was only destined to last twenty-one matches. The club faltered right in the closing stages, losing 2-0 to Manchester United to see its pursuit of the longest ever winning spree in club football be curtailed.
While the defeat does little to alter things in the larger scenario with City still in control of the Premier League, the loss is bound to have been a tough one for the league leaders to digest. Not only did it curb a sensational run of results but more importantly came against a side the team hates losing against.
Guardiola once again has a fully fit squad available tonight, although he would be expected to make some changes from the weekend with the likes of Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker and Aymeric Laporte in line for possible recalls.
Guardiola has no new issues following the Manchester derby defeat to United that ended his side’s 21-game winning run but the City boss routinely makes changes and could well do so for the midweek visit of Saints.
Phil Foden and Sergio Aguero could be in contention for starting roles at the Etihad, while Nathan Ake is available for selection again.
